It provides a long sequence of Plio-Pleistocene, mostly volcano-sedimentary, deposits that are rich in archaeological and paleontological remains overlying Precambrian metamorphic rocks. It became known worldwide in the 1970s for stimulating discoveries, such as the holotype and other remains of Australopithecus afarensis and remarkable evidence of the earliest bipedal hominin tracks dated to 3.66 million years ago.
